Reef Fishing Cayman Islands: Your Private Charter, Your Pace

What a Private Reef Fishing Charter in Grand Cayman Involves

Surfside Charters offers a private reef fishing charter that puts your party alone on the boat with a captain who picks the spot that morning. Group fishing boats cannot do that. They run a fixed route on a fixed clock with thirty strangers on deck.

Our reef fishing charters in Grand Cayman leave from Camana Bay, with optional pickup by boat at the Cayman Island Yacht Club or Kaibo and every route is customizable. No crowds. Our private charter trips around Grand Cayman cover this water at every trip length, from a half-day reef fishing charter to a full day.

Calm, Sheltered Water Inside the North Sound Barrier Reef

The barrier reef does the work. It breaks the swell before it reaches the North Sound, which is why you get calm waters on mornings when the north wall is unfishable. Depths inside run eight to forty feet over live coral reefs, patch coral structure and white sand, and the crystal-clear waters let you watch the marine life working while you fish.

Bottom Fishing with Light Tackle Over Live Coral Reefs

During your bottom fishing excursion, our captain will drop you over live coral reefs in twenty to sixty feet and you fish vertically with light tackle and natural bait rather than trolling a spread. The bite is fast and close, which is the appeal for a first-time fisherman: you feel the take and you are hooked up inside a minute. Our crew handles the rigging and the baiting for all skill levels.

Every reef fishing trip includes:

  • Rods, reels, lures and all bait and tackle, with no rental fees
  • Fishing gear and fishing equipment sized for children as well as adults
  • Fresh fruit platter, chips, water and soda; cheese and charcuterie on request
  • Snorkel gear on every trip, plus SeaBobs and paddleboards when you charter Bamboozled

Fishing Charters on the Barrier Reef: What to Expect

Grand Cayman's reef holds fish year round. While most charters focus exclusively on offshore deep-sea fishing, reef fishing inside the barrier reef offers constant, fast-paced action. Here is what you can expect to catch.

The Species You'll Catch Reef Fishing in Grand Cayman

Yellowtail Snapper, Mutton Snapper and Nassau Grouper

Yellowtail Snapper is the fish you will catch most. It shoals over the reef edge in numbers, takes a small bait readily, and eats well. Mutton Snapper runs larger and sits deeper, usually on sand at the base of a coral head. Nassau Grouper is the one to know before you go: the species is protected by a closed season and catch limits in Cayman waters, so your captain will tell you on the day whether one can be kept.

Bar Jack, Blue Runner, Triggerfish and Barracuda

Bar Jack and blue runner give beginners their first real fight, and both are common in the shallow flats and along the reef line. Triggerfish and grunts feed on the bottom and keep the rods busy between the better fish. Sergeant Majors and Blue Tangs flash under the hull the whole time, which keeps the whole family watching even when nothing is biting. Barracuda is the game fish wildcard on light tackle, all speed and teeth.

Our captains know which coral heads hold which species at which stage of the tide. That is local knowledge, not a chart plotter.

Your Boat Options: Two Private Fishing Charters from Camana Bay

Two boats, two very different days. Both leave the same dock, and the right one depends on group size and how seriously you want to fish. Eight anglers who care about the catch want the Intrepid. Fourteen people where half want to swim want our catamaran.

Mojito Majic: The Intrepid Built for Bottom Fishing

Mojito Majic is the fishing boat. A 38ft Intrepid 377, quick enough to reach the far side of the North Sound in twenty minutes and stable enough to fish four rods without tangling. It carries up to 10 guests.

Bamboozled: The 56ft Lagoon Catamaran for Bigger Fishing Groups

Bamboozled is a 56ft Lagoon sailing catamaran, and she changes what the day is. Shade, a galley, watersports, and partner catering with 48 hours' notice, or a private chef with 72 hours' notice, quiet luxury without the fuss. Rods still come aboard, but everybody doesn’t have to fish if they don’t want to.

The Four-Hour Half-Day and the Seven-Hour Full Day to Starfish Point

Half day reef fishing charters are one fishing stop plus one snorkel stop, usually Coral Gardens. Start at 8am, back on the dock before lunch. Full day reef fishing charters are a different animal:

  1. Reef fishing on the morning tide, when the bite is best
  2. Snorkel stops on the barrier reef or the Kittiwake wreck
  3. Starfish Point, knee deep, for the Red Cushion Sea Stars

Cayman Islands Fishing Rules, Seasons and Marine Parks

The Cayman Islands protects roughly half its territorial waters, and the rules are taken seriously. Marine parks cover the reef in front of Seven Mile Beach and George Town, the Department of Environment enforces them, and the protected areas around Little Cayman are stricter still. Your captain explains what can be kept before the lines go in.

At Surfside Charters, our captains take these regulations seriously and make responsible fishing part of every trip. We respect marine park boundaries, protected species and local catch rules, helping safeguard Cayman’s reefs and fish populations so they remain healthy, productive and enjoyable for anglers, divers and future generations.

Conch Season, Lobster Season and Nassau Grouper Closures

Three closures shape what you can keep:

  1. Conch season is closed from 1 May to 31 October
  2. Lobster season is closed from 1 March to 30 November
  3. Nassau Grouper are protected during their spawning season

Catch and release is encouraged on every reef fishing trip, and catch-and-release survival rates in shallow water beat anything you would see on a deep sea release. Other legal catch is filleted at the dock or on board, depending on what you want to take home

Your Grand Cayman Fishing Day, Built Around Your Group

Most Grand Cayman fishing charters sell you a seat. We sell the boat, the crew and the schedule, and the difference shows up in small decisions: staying an extra forty minutes because the bite turned on, or leaving early because the wind swung north.

FAQs About Reef Fishing Cayman Islands

You don't need to arrange anything before your trip. Your captain handles the boat side and explains the local rules, including size limits, closed seasons and what can be kept.

Yes, and it is the trip we would recommend for both. Beginner anglers and first-timers catch fish on the reef within minutes, and the calm water keeps the youngest guests comfortable. Non-fishers aboard can snorkel, rest and relax, while the rest fish.

Inside the barrier reef, seasickness is rare. Take something an hour before boarding. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses; Cayman bans oxybenzone formulas; do not use them over living coral. Both boats have shaded seating.

Both, depending on the species. Your catch can be filleted either on board or at the dock, depending on your preference and what you’d like to bring home. Protected fish species and anything undersized go back in the water.

Every group is different, so we keep our charters flexible. Whether you want more fishing, time in the water or a relaxed day exploring Grand Cayman, our crew can help tailor the trip around your interests, pace and group. Popular charter excursions include:
