Private Bioluminescence Tour Grand Cayman: Your Own Boat on Bio Bay

Inside Grand Cayman's Bioluminescent Bay

Bio Bay nights run on request aboard Mojito Majic, our 38ft Intrepid 377, when the moon and conditions line up. She takes up to 10 guests (8 recommended) and reaches Cayman Kai quickly under power, which means more time in the bay and less transit in the dark.

Most bioluminescence tours load twenty strangers onto a shared deck. A private bioluminescence charter gives you the boat and the pace. Your captain reads the conditions and picks the anchoring spot, and you decide how long you stay in the water.

What Bioluminescent Plankton Actually Are

The glow comes from dinoflagellates, bioluminescent plankton that flash when disturbed. In Cayman, the main species is Pyrodinium bahamense, concentrated enough to make every hand movement sparkle. Their blue-green light comes from a chemical reaction, not moonlight.

Underwater, the effect surrounds your mask, which is why snorkel gear is provided. Because it is natural, every night looks slightly different, while daytime waters appear completely ordinary.

Why the New Moon Decides Your Date

We run Bio Bay nights on request, and the moon decides which nights are worth it. The glow is strongest for roughly two weeks out of every month, around the new moon. A bright moon washes the light out of the water, so the darkest nights give the strongest display.

Moonrise and moonset times matter more than the moon phase alone. A date that looks wrong on a calendar sometimes works, and a date that looks right sometimes does not.

Three conditions decide how bright your night looks:

  1. Moonlight above the horizon during your window in the bay
  2. Tide level, which changes how concentrated the organisms are
  3. Weather, since cloud reflects light pollution from Seven Mile Beach and George Town back down onto the water

Mojito Majic: Your Private Boat to Bio Bay

Every Bio Bay night runs aboard Mojito Majic, our 38ft Intrepid 377 power yacht. She takes up to 10 guests, with 8 the comfortable number for a night on the water. Your group has the whole boat, and nobody else comes aboard.

Built to Get You There Fast

Mojito Majic reaches Cayman Kai in a fraction of the time a slower boat would take. That means more minutes in the bay and less time in transit after dark. On a moonless night, the open deck gives you the Milky Way over the North Sound while your eyes adjust and you wait for full dark.

Your Private Bio Bay Charter: What to Expect

Bio Bay trips run after dark, and the exact timing depends on the moon and conditions on your night. Once we have picked the night together, we confirm a departure time. Some groups start earlier and catch the sunset on the way out. You’re welcome to bring your own drinks aboard.

A fresh fruit platter, chips, water and soda come aboard on every charter, and cheese and charcuterie are available on request. Catering through our partner restaurants needs 48 hours’ notice, and a private chef can join with 72 hours’ notice.

Meeting the Boat at Camana Bay

Bio Bay nights depart from Camana Bay, on the North Sound side of Seven Mile Beach. Guests meet us at the dock. If it’s easier, we can collect you by boat from docks we can reach, including the Cayman Islands Yacht Club and Kaibo. Kaibo sits close to the bay itself. Tell us where you are staying and we will suggest the simplest place to meet.

The Route: Across the North Sound to Cayman Kai

The run out crosses the North Sound toward Cayman Kai. Leave before dark and you can stop at Starfish Point on the way, where red cushion sea stars sit in knee-deep sand. We ask guests to look without lifting: a starfish out of the water dies.

Then the light drops and we move on to the bay. On the last stretch we keep the deck lights low so your eyes adjust before anyone gets in.

In the Water: Our Bioluminescence Snorkel Tour

You can watch the glowing waters from the deck and see plenty. In the water with a mask you see thousands of individual points of light instead of a general shimmer, and that difference is the reason most guests get in. We carry gear for everyone aboard for a seamless experience.

Snorkel Gear, Life Vests and Nervous Swimmers

Masks, fins, and a life vest for every guest come with the charter. Water temperature in the bay runs warm year-round, so wet suits are rarely needed, and the bay itself is shallow, calm, and free of current. Nervous swimmers do well here for exactly that reason.

Nobody has to swim. Plenty of guests stay aboard with a drink and watch the swimmers trail light behind them, which is its own kind of view.

Family Nights: Kids, Minimum Age and Life Jackets

This is a family-friendly charter and works for all ages. We carry child-sized masks and life jackets, and the crew runs a short briefing before anyone enters the water.

  • Shallow, current-free water at the anchoring spot
  • Child-sized snorkel gear and life jackets aboard
  • No hard age requirement, though we talk through very young children first
  • Photo opportunities at Starfish Point before dark

Why a Private Boat Tour Beats a Kayak Tour

For guests choosing between a kayak and a private boat tour, the biggest difference is comfort, flexibility, and access. Kayaks offer a close-to-the-water experience, but require paddling and often limit swimming. A private charter removes those trade-offs, giving your group the bay to itself with an experienced local crew guiding the entire trip.

Pricing, Booking Terms and Weather

Bio Bay nights are a private, on-request experience, so we quote each one when you enquire, based on your group and the night you choose. Full booking and cancellation terms are on our booking policy page. Weather is the one thing nobody controls, and safety decides it: if the captain cancels for weather or sea conditions, we offer a new date or a full refund.

Plan Your Night on the Water at Cayman Kai

Reserve your night on the water with Surfside Charters and experience Cayman Kai after dark from the comfort of a private boat. Cruise with your own group, explore the bioluminescent bay, and enjoy a relaxed evening guided by an experienced local crew.

With more space, personal attention, and fewer crowds than a shared tour, we make it easy to enjoy one of Grand Cayman’s most memorable nighttime experiences on your own terms.

FAQs About a Bioluminescence Tour in Grand Cayman

Moon phase sets the ceiling and tide level sets the detail. On the darkest nights of the month, with the moon below the horizon, visibility is at its best. A rising tide pushes cleaner water in and can thin the display slightly, which is one reason your captain picks the hour rather than the clock picking it for him.

Yes to children, and no to compulsory swimming. Kids handle this trip well because the water is shallow and warm. Every guest gets a life vest, and staying on deck is a normal choice rather than a disappointing one.

No. We run Bio Bay nights on request rather than on a fixed timetable. Send us your dates, and we will check the moon and the forecast and suggest the nights most likely to give you a strong glow.

No. Guests meet us at Camana Bay, and we can collect by boat from docks we can reach, such as the Cayman Islands Yacht Club and Kaibo. Tell us where you are staying when you enquire, and we will suggest the easiest meeting point.

Every group is different, so we keep our charters flexible. Whether you want more fishing, time in the water or a relaxed day exploring Grand Cayman, our crew can help tailor the trip around your interests, pace and group. Popular charter excursions include:
